Say hello to the Holiday Cutout Dress & Top from Bella Sunshines Design. It’s such a sweet little top/dress and takes a cute spin on the peek-a-boo back dresses that have been popping up a lot lately.

Here’s something new for my reviews I’ve been meaning to do for ages. A review chart! They’ve been popping up on other blogs lately (and we’ll be using one for the new pattern reviewing blog that I’m going to be a part of soon) so I thought I might as well start using mine! I’ll have a downloadable PDF available in a few days.

So here’s an overview of what you can find in the pattern:

Review Chart of BSD Holiday Cutout chart by Lulu&Celeste

There are 6 different cutouts/appliques that are included in the pattern: star, bunny, shamrock, heart, tree and pumpkin. Originally I wanted to make a bunny one but I didn’t have any coordinating fabric to go with the bunny fabric I wanted to use for the skirt (and didn’t want to do a cutout of a bunny on the bunny fabric), so I went with the heart. I  think it turned out super cute!

Instructions are given to just include one heart applique on the front (where the largest heart is on Baby V’s top), but I thought it would be so cute to make a bunch of hearts looking like they were floating to the top of the dress. So I drew a few more hearts getting successively smaller with each one (since the largest heart applique I used is the smallest one included in the pattern) and appliqued them on.

The only other change I made to the pattern was to add the eyelet on. Since the fabric was fairly simple with little dots all over I thought it added an extra sweet touch.

Also, the only bias tape I had on hand that more or less matched was the mini width and I didn’t have quite a full package so my ties ended up being a little short. I could have made my own bias tape but I wasn’t in the mood.
I’m really trying to use up my stash as much as possible.. Also I didn’t have time to get to the fabric store 😛

Doing the cut out wasn’t as painful as I thought it would be! I can’t wait to try another one. Maybe I’ll have time to whip out a bunny dress in time for Easter….

The top/dress is easy to get on and off, it’s wide enough to pull up over the hips and I’ve even managed to get on it on Baby V by sliding it over her head. It would look cute layered over a tee.

The instructions are clear and easy to read. This is a good pattern for a beginner who wants a little challenge and try something new.
