For the Love of Legends Tour – Unicorns!

When I first signed up for this tour I knew right away what legend I wanted to do… unicorns! I LOVED unicorns when I was little and Silly Bean loves them too. She keeps asking if we can get her one as a pet.

I was about 8 years old when I first watched the movie Legend, I think the last time I watched it I was probably around 11 or 12. I loved the unicorn in that movie. I mean I couldn’t even remember the name of the movie when I was writing this up but I did a Google search of 80s movies and unicorn and saw this movie still and knew it was the unicorn I had loved. I remember loving the movie as a kid, but even so, it’s the unicorn that I remember most.

When I told Silly Bean I was going to make something to do with unicorns she described to me such an elaborate costume idea that I knew I wouldn’t have time to do for this tour but I will work on it for Halloween. Miss V has asked me to make her a dragon costume. She’s only 2.5 though so she’ll probably change her mind, but I think I like the idea of a dragon costume!

My first idea was to make her a headband, but they don’t really like wearing headbands so it’d be a waste of time. (Although my sketch was looking so pretty, so I’ll probably still work on it!)

Then I started drawing out unicorns and thought of making a little softie or an ornament or an applique.

Finally I settled on making a simple embroidery.

Which I might still transform into an applique. My embroidery is only about 2″ tall so it’d be better if I enlarged it before turning it into a free motion applique.

I debated over filling in the whole unicorn face and probably should because the ears look weird since I had decided to fill in the inner ear, but I was worried about the detail on the eyes and mouth getting lost so decided against it. What do you think? Should I fill in the face? It would be the same aqua/mint as the outline.

Regardless the girls are happy with their new wall art!

I was hoping to have a mini tutorial for the embroidery ready, but I’m doing some fine tuning on the unicorn drawing still. To make it look smoother and for it to scan the proper size, it always scans too huge!

I must have had mystical legends on my mind because when I sewed up some pjs for my girls for another tour next week I wound up adding a mermaid free motion applique to one and making a lake monster for the other pair. Here are some sneak peeks:

(I’ll be sharing the lake monster applique next Thursday as a free download so come back then!)

    1. Thanks so much Roxanne! My hand stitching isn’t all that great but the kids are awesome and always love whatever I make. They make me feel like a rockstar! 😉
