It’s my turn on the Back to School tour! Deb and I are co-hosting another tour all based on the back to school theme. For today’s post I decided to make a painting smock.
There are over 30 bloggers taking part in the tour this time! It’s always so much fun (and well, work) when there are that many bloggers on board as you get to see so much inspiration. So far there have been supplies like totes, pencil cases and baskets, as well as lots of clothing! So much fun! Check out what I made and then scroll down to enter the giveaway!

A painting smock is on Silly Bean’s school supply list and the one she had last year for Kindergarten is too small so a new one was definitely needed. I started this one a few months ago, and finally got around to finishing it this week.
This is the Flower version of the Puperita Apron Smock*. The Flower version of the painting smock has raglan sleeves and is super easy and fast to put together, the Bear version has regular set-in sleeves.

The pattern also comes with two different pocket styles but I decided to leave them off. The flower version does include a flower applique but I decided to make my own butterfly applique. I like the look of free motion applique (FMA) so that’s what I did.
FMA is fun to do, it’s a little liberating in that you don’t need to have perfect lines. I like how the stitching has that hand-drawn look. I made the butterfly myself and will share a template and tutorial soon, but the butterfly is a pretty simple shape.
The painting smock is meant for Silly Bean who is 6, however she refused to get photos in it when I needed them. Miss V gladly let me take a couple pictures but she’s only 3 and roughly a foot shorter than Silly Bean, lol. The painting should come to just above Silly Bean’s knees.
Of course, I say she gladly let me take photos of her but naturally she wouldn’t stand still or stand in the nicer spot on the deck. Lol

Kids will be kids! Silly Bean will be so happy to sport her new shirt when the time comes. I’ll bet she’ll even be very careful not to get it too messy! Purple is my color, so I love it too!
