DIY Picture frame advent calendar

Welcome to the monthly Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen! So this month I made a Picture Frame Advent Calendar.

I’ve been wanting to make an advent calendar for awhile and saw some really pretty picture frame advent calendars all over Pinterest. There are quite a few of them! One of the ones I was looking at was this one here:

I decided to use the motivation of this challenge to finally make my own.

This was a super thrifty project! I made use of what I had already, and only needed to purchase the mini clothespins.

Gather your supplies to make a picture frame advent calendar!

What you’ll need:

  • old picture frame
  • string/twine
  • cardstock (or mini envelopes)
  • screw eyes from a picture hanging kit*
  • mini clothespins
  • ruler and pencil
  • scissors and glue (if making the envelopes)

You’ll also need a template to make the mini envelopes if you’re not purchasing them ready made. I used the template found on Sarica Studio here.

It was pretty simple to make, the longest part was making the envelopes so if you have a Cricut there must be a svg file somewhere for cutting those out.

Other than the mini clothespins, everything was stuff I already had on hand. I bought 4 packages of mini clothespins (2 packs of 8 and 2 packs of 10) for a total cost of $5 plus tax!

Prepare the picture frame

Remove the glass and backing. And if your frame has been languishing in a back room like mine, give it a nice wipe down to remove all the dust and cobwebs, ha. Mine was already painted green but if you like you could paint your frame whatever colour you’d like.

Using your ruler, mark along the inside of the frame where you’d like to place the screw eyes. My frame was on the smaller size, and wanted to keep it oriented in portrait layout so I decided I would need five rows. A larger frame may need fewer rows. Make sure to keep the distance between each screw eye fairly even and at the same distance on both sides.

Insert the screw eyes at each marking. The wood on the inside of the frame isn’t too hard so with a little pressure I was able to screw them in.

Tie twine to the screw eyes on each end.

Make your envelopes

Using the template, trace out 25 envelopes. Cut out and assemble. They’re easy to make, they just take long, so if you have a Cricut or other cutting machine use it to cut out your envelopes and save yourself a ton of time!

For the numbers, I simply used markers to write them out but stamps if you have would be cute. Write the numbers on white cardstock and cut out. Glue to the front of each envelope.

Fill your envelopes

Inside each envelope I listed Christmas themed activities we could do as a family. Things such as crafts, baking, family game night, movie night and so on. There are so many advent activity ideas floating around on the internet, choose what you like best. I decided I wanted to include only activity ideas in mine, but I know some people like to put small gifts or candies inside their advent calendars.
